In late April 1975, shortly before the capture of Saigon by North Vietnamese forces, 8-year-old Han-Hoan Dang fled the city with his parents, two younger sisters and some of his extended family.
His grandfather - an importer and exporter of sporting goods in Saigon who had done significant business with the Americans, French and British - feared persecution from the communists, and was able to get his family refugee status to flee to the United States.
“It was very chaotic,” said Dang of the city the day his family left. “People were lining up in the streets. It looked like they were lining up to get out of the city.”
